“I Wish My Life Were Like A Musical” has just begun it’s first full scale UK tour at Hope Mill Theatre, an absolute gem in Manchester’s theatre scene. Originally a hit at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and played on Matinee for many years now, the show seamlessly transitions to the cosy confines of Hope Mill. Alexander S Bermange’s collection of comedic monologues turned musical numbers resonates deeply, weaving together a rich tapestry of relatable tales that leave you laughing and reflecting in equal measure.

Luke Harley’s prowess on stage is breathtaking, effortlessly hitting discordant and quirky notes that evoke both laughter and admiration. Sev Keoshgerian tackles socially awkward characters with charm, and his heartfelt number about being the understudy is one of the show’s touching highlights.

Jessi O’Donnell shines in her Diva number, performing with absolute relish and effortlessly keeping the audience in stitches. Her presence on stage is magnetic, contributing to the show’s infectious energy and humour.

Julie Yammanee’s performance is a masterclass in vocal range and comedic timing. Her song about loving to sing, showcasing her ability to sing off-pitch, off-key, and off-rhythm, is a standout moment that captivates with its hilarity and controlled chaos.

By the end of the show, Alexander S. Bermange’s observational comedy touches every facet of musical theatre, including astute observations of the audience’s experiences sitting in the stalls. Both the cast, crew, and audience truly feel “seen” and connected through Bermange’s keen insights.

A special mention has to go to Alexander S. Bermange for providing piano accompaniment throughout the entire show. The musical score is both effortless and rich in tone, complementing the performances with its depth and nuance.

Together, the cast create a seamless and memorable theatrical experience that celebrates the joys and quirks of musical theatre. “I Wish My Life Were Like A Musical” is a must-see for anyone who appreciates clever humour, sharp wit, and top-notch musical performances. Comedy can be subjective but as we left the theatre, I heard the whole audience buzzing in agreement that this was a captivating and entertaining show!

I Wish My Life Were Like A Musical runs at Hope Mill Theatre until 6 July, 2024 – Get more information about the show and tour dates from the official site HERE.
