Review: Kinky Boots

08-05/24 Storyhouse, Chester – by Jamie Griffiths

Here on Matinee we’ve been charting the progression of this new production of Kinky Boots, staged at the Storyhouse in Chester, with eager anticipation. It’s another significant production that is sure to put Storyhouse on the map – and I’m pleased to say it delivers the electrifying performance I hoped for. We are also treated to a clever, immersive finale that brings the audience closer to the characters and the narrative than you could imagine.

At the heart of this dazzling spectacle is Duane-Lamonte O’Garro’s sensational portrayal of Lola. O’Garro not only embodies the essence of Lola with charisma and flair but also infuses the character with depth and vulnerability, making Lola a truly captivating presence on stage. You could have heard a pin drop as Lola delivered Not My Father’s Son.

Similarly Leah Vassell’s Lauren is every bit as quirky as those we’ve seen on the West End and Broadway stages, but she injects something of her own into the role too. Her vocals and comedic awkwardness are a joy to watch, and you’re rooting for her from the opening bars of The History Of Wrong Guys.

But beyond the glitz and glamour, Kinky Boots also delivers a powerful message about embracing diversity and finding the courage to be true to oneself. Through its uplifting narrative and infectious spirit, the production leaves a lasting impression that resonates long after the finale which doesn’t take place on stage – there is no curtain call!  The production’s finale, set on a custom-made catwalk, is nothing short of a showstopper. As the cast struts their stuff with confidence and style, accompanied by infectious music and vibrant choreography, the energy in the theater reaches a fever pitch, culminating in a euphoric celebration of individuality and acceptance.

In a quirky twist earlier this year I actually introduced Danny Becker (Charlie) and Duane-Lamonte O’Garrow (Lola/Simon) ahead of their first rehearsals and I soon discovered the passion that the two of them had for this musical, Indeed, Danny had tried auditioning years earlier as an Angel and whilst he never won that role, the time was finally right for him to don those heels. Duane-Lamonte told us of his passion for Lola’s story and how he wanted to do it justice, and he should be very proud.

In conclusion, Kinky Boots at the Storyhouse in Chester is a must-see theatrical experience that combines phenomenal performances with dazzling spectacle. With Duane-Lamonte O’Garro’s mesmerizing portrayal of Lola and the unforgettable finale on the custom-made catwalk, this production truly shines as a beacon of joy, acceptance, and empowerment.
