Review: Here You Come Again

Sunderland Empire, 11-02-25 by Steve Colman

I had high expectations for Here You Come Again, the Dolly Parton musical, and it’s safe to say those expectations were not just met but exceeded. Originally written by two-time Emmy Award-winning comedy writer and songwriter Bruce Vilanch, alongside Gabriel Barre and Tricia Paoluccio, this production has been adapted for the UK by acclaimed playwright Jonathan Harvey (Gimme, Gimme, Gimme and Coronation Street). Given Harvey’s strong musical theatre background, including Dusty the Musical and Closer to Heaven—both of which are regularly played on Matinee Radio—we anticipated something special. And that’s exactly what we got.

From the moment the show starts, Here You Come Again wraps you in its warmth, wit, and wonderful music. The story follows Kevin, played with charm and vulnerability by Steven Webb, a down-on-his-luck superfan of Dolly Parton, who finds himself at rock bottom in life and love. Just when he needs her most, the Queen of Country herself appears—though only he can see her—to guide him back to happiness with her signature blend of sass, wisdom, and rhinestone-studded optimism.

Tricia Paoluccio is simply phenomenal as Dolly. She embodies the spirit, humour, and charisma of the country icon so effortlessly that you’d be forgiven for thinking the real Dolly had strutted onto the stage. Her comedic timing is razor-sharp, her delivery full of the cheek and charm we love from Parton, and, most importantly, her voice soars on every classic hit. She not only plays Dolly—she becomes her.

The production itself is wonderfully staged, with a cleverly designed set that keeps the audience engaged throughout. Dolly’s sudden, magical appearances—whether stepping out of a wardrobe or emerging from the bathroom—add a delightful theatricality to the show. The way the set and lighting work to bring these moments to life is truly impressive, creating an immersive experience that enhances the heartfelt, yet hilarious, story.

Another clever twist is how Kevin’s parents, though unseen for much of the show, eventually materialize as the backing musicians, seamlessly blending their presence into the fabric of the performance. This smart narrative choice not only gives the show a tight, intimate feel but also allows the focus to remain on the central duo—Kevin and his larger-than-life imaginary mentor.

Of course, no Dolly Parton musical would be complete without her legendary songs, and Here You Come Again delivers hit after hit, from “Jolene” to “9 to 5” and, of course, the titular track. Each song is woven into the narrative in a way that feels natural and meaningful, making this much more than just a jukebox musical—it’s a heartfelt, uplifting story wrapped in the glittering magic of Dolly.

Whether you’re a lifelong Dolly fan or just love a feel-good musical with a lot of heart, Here You Come Again is a rewarding watch. The show is packed with laugh-out-loud one-liners, touching moments, and dazzling performances that will leave you humming all the way home. If you love Dolly, you’ll adore this show—and you’ll probably want to see it again.
